While omega-3 fatty acids are essential for normal cell functioning, they cannot be made by animals and therefore must be consumed in horse feed. Although fat supplementation is common and its benefits well-documented, there is growing interest in the role of essential omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LCPUFA), especially DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) on horse health and performance.
